What to do if firmware keeps uploading every time?

Prashant Vaibhav (The 'tech' guy) 9 years ago updated by WILLIAM EUARL 3 years ago 9
In the past few days we have received reports about a bug where the firmware is uploaded every time you connect to the plane. Here is some important information regarding this.

UPDATE: 10 JULY 2015: finally the update is live. It fixes the firmware upload problem. Please download it from the App Store!

UPDATE: 30 JUNE 2015: Our beta testers have confirmed that the problem is solved. We have already sent the updated app to Apple for approval. Within a few days it will be released on the app store. Please update!

UPDATE 29 JUNE 2015: We have a beta version of the app (v3.3.2) which should fix the problem. Please comment here with your email address (or write to support@tobyrich.com) to get an invitation to download the beta version through Apple TestFlight.

NOTE: This only applies to iOS users. Android users do not need any firmware upload!

  • First, make sure you are running the latest version of the SmartPlane app. Currently this is 3.3.0. (To check the app version you have installed, open the SmartPlane app, swipe down the "searching" screen and then swipe the horizon screen to the right. The Software version is displayed in the green bar).
  • The issue seems to happen mostly for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ users.

We are working hard to identify this issue asap and release an app update which fixes it. Thank you for your patience.

Things to try meanwhile:

  • Completely erase the app and download it again. You can erase the app by tapping and holding its icon until it starts to jiggle and a cross appears on its top left corner. Tap the cross to delete the app. Then download it again from the App Store.
  • Go to Settings app on your iPhone, then choose General > Reset > Erase Network Settings. This is known to solve Bluetooth related problems (although you will have to re-enter your WiFi passwords).
  • Try to fully charge your plane.

More information:

  • The firmware upload will only happen once and takes around 3 min. If it happens every time, it means the last upload did not succeed and the app is trying again.
  • Does the propeller of your SmartPlane rotate briefly (half a second) when you turn it on? This means it is still in factory test mode and the firmware is not yet uploaded.
  • If you touch the screen while firmware upload is in progress, you will get a popup box with the Batch No. of your plane. Please include this when writing to us.

If you are having this issue, could you please comment on this post stating your iPhone model, the app version, and the batch number? This will help us identify any patterns.

Thanks.

Some suggestions for improvements

  • At the moment at least my plane keeps the current throttle setting when losing the BLE connection. I would feel much safer if it would cut the throttle (and perhaps even give some rudder to accelerate the decent) as the plane can fly quite a long distance before crashing.
  • An audible warning on low battery and low signal would be really nice as I seldom have the time to look at the phone screen instead of the plane (Especially as the plane cuts power immediately on low battery instead of slowly reducing/limiting throttle)
  • Maybe a "I am a big guy"-Version with elevator and/or ailerons ;-)

Anyway, flying it is a lot of fun even outdoors (with no wind) and extremely easy.

Thanks for your feedback and glad to hear you enjoy it!

1. On losing connection, the plane does reset itself. The motor will stop.

2. Good idea about audible warning, we will test it out for the next update.

3. New products are on the horizon! Stay tuned.

Achieving Level Flight?

Anonymous 9 years ago updated by mike k 9 years ago 2
Got it working right away, but seems very difficult to fly straight and level.  Is there a way to stop the plane from "Purpoising" (where it keeps acting like its swimming over waves)?

Build your own app....

You have stated that we can build our own app. Thats a great idea, i think it will only make it more creative and popular.

When will you publish the control protocols, so we can build our own apps?
Answer
Sorry for the late reply - we've already written the documentation a long time ago but due to some content rights issues it has not been officially released by us.

In the meantime, please download the "PowerUp 3.0 - Hacker's Guide" from this page:
http://www.poweruptoys.com/pages/documentation

The SmartPlane is exactly the same internally, with the only difference being on page 10, the base UUID for TobyRich/SmartPlane is: 75B64E51-xxxx-4ED1-921A-476090D80BA7 instead of the TailorToys UUID.

Let me know if you need any more info!

App is currently not available on IOS? So an expensive paper-weight that is not very good as a paper weight....

Plane arrived. Very excited child.
But the App is not available in the UK or the US on IOS.
When will the app be available, or should I just send the plane back for a refund?
